Proud to be October's Barn Of The Month!

Located in beautiful Manning Park, British Columbia, we at SMS specialize in sport horses. We have several breeds including Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, Arabs and even some Ponies and Drafts as well as offering boarding. We also have a string of Falabellas that have all been doing well in the show ring.

Nestled between majestic mountains, wide open meadows and lush forests is Silver Moon Stables. SMS owns several hundred acres of land in this beautiful park. On one of the meadows is the heart of it all: the barns and arenas. As you arrive, a young lady is riding a charismatic bay stallion in one of the outdoor arenas. She waves, and as you approach she dismounts and calls 'Just let me untack and I'll be right with you.' A short time later, she returns and introduces herself as Erin, the owner's best friend and one of the riders at SMS. You start your tour in one of the barns:

The first barn is the mares barn. This is the barn where all of the mares and fillies of SMS that are currently showing are kept, regardless of age or breed. At the end of the 'L' shaped building is one of our indoor arenas. Along one wall is the viewing area for guests who want to drop in on training sessions. It also serves as a spectator seating area for shows. Down the hallway is the office. As you enter, the scent of leather is prominent. A battered couch, desk and chairs furnish the room, there are pictures of our wonderful horses and barn animals hanging on the walls. The desk is littered with papers, and there is saddle soap and a curry comb on the couch. Still, there is a sense of order among the chaos, and the room has a feeling of comfort.

The second of the four barns is the Stallion/Gelding barn. As the name indicates, this is where we keep all of our stallions, geldings and colts, regardless of breed or age. As with the mares' barn, at the end of the 'L' shaped structure is another indoor arena. There is another spectator area but no offices. However, because stallions can be a bit more of a handfull than mares, each stall has a second door leading outside to an individual paddock. The paddocks are screened to prevent the studs from fighting and injuring each other and themselves. We are fortunate at SMS to have fairly calm stallions, with few exceptions.

The third barn is the boarder barn. As you enter, you notice a strange looking stall at the end of the row, next to the tack rooms. Erin notices, and takes you inside. You're astonished to realize that it contains a stair case. Upstairs is a hay loft. Instead of hay, it's the boarder's lounge. There's a fridge, microwave, sink, bathroom and a comfortable living room with TV and VCR. You're told that the TV and VCR are for horse related videos only. You go back downstairs and see that this barn as well has an attached indoor arena. There is no viewing area, as this barn is for boarder use only.

The fourth barn is a lot smaller than the others. This is the training barn. It houses all of the horses that are being trained by SMS staff. The last two stalls have been converted into an office that keeps the records of the horses in the training barn. This barn has it's own indoor arena too.

As you step back into the mare's barn, there is another person waiting with two tacked up horses. "Hi, I'm the owner, Tamara. And this is ""+++Ty's Moonlight Sonata and BC Blush. I'm sorry I couldn't be here earlier, but I had a previous appointment with a new boarder." You are told that Tamara will finish the tour with you on horse back. You go down a few beautiful trails, and along one of the Cross Country trails. You notice that there are different sized jumps. Tamara explains that each of the courses has fences for all levels. The fences are marked with small colored flags, so the riders know which is their course. As you are going along one scenic trail, it leads up to a lookout point and you have a spectacular view of the surrounding forest and meadows. Before heading back to SMS, you go through a wider trail and come upon a clearing that appears to be another stable.

"This is Blue Moon Minis, all of SMS's minis are here." says Tamara. As you tour the facilities, you note that it's not much diferent from SMS. The barn (only one) houses all of the minis. You notice that the stall doors are smaller, so that their occupants can easily see out. The rings are only slightly smaller, and you notice a stunning tobiano gelding going through a course of jumps set up around one arena.

A little farther along the trail, closer to SMS is a clearing that joins onto the main property of the farm. Tamara explains that this is where the broodmares are kept. She notices the puzzled look on face and explains further that the mare are kept separate so they can have peace and quiet and relatively no stress. The one barn houses all of the broodmares. You find out also that there is and indoor arena and a small outdoor arena for them too. You ride closer to one of the fences and you catch a glimpse of the gleaming coats of the broodmares in their field.

You head back to SMS, marveling at the diversity and beauty of the farm
